Extract audio from video without extra software
VLC lets you pull the audio track from any video file and save it as an MP3 in a few clicks — no third-party converter needed.
- Open Media > Convert/Save [CTRL + R]
- Click Add and select your video file
- Click Convert/Save
- Under Profile, choose Audio – MP3
- Click Browse, name the output file with
.mp3 - Click Start

Open the Convert/Save dialog
In VLC, go to Media > Convert/Save or press CTRL + R.
Add your video file
Click Add, browse to your video, select it, then click Convert/Save.

Select the MP3 profile
Under Profile, open the dropdown and choose Audio – MP3.
Set the output file
Click Browse, choose a save location, and make sure the filename ends in
.mp3.Start the conversion
Click Start. The progress bar will move — when it stops, your MP3 is ready.
Open the Convert/Save dialog
Go to File > Convert/Stream… in the menu bar.
Add your video
Click Open media, select your video file, and click Open.
Choose the MP3 profile
Under Choose profile, select MP3 from the list.
Save and convert
Click Save as File, pick a destination with a
.mp3extension, then click Save.
💡 Other audio formats
VLC can also export to OGG (Vorbis), FLAC, WAV, and AAC — just choose a different profile in step 3.
Final Thoughts
VLC’s built-in converter handles the job cleanly for most use cases. The output quality depends on the source video’s audio bitrate — VLC doesn’t artificially enhance it. If you need batch conversion or advanced bitrate control, a dedicated audio tool will serve better.
